ViewMaster phone VR system with red X crossing it out

What is the Best Virtual Reality Headset in May 2021 and June 2021 for Canada?

In May 2021, the best VR headset is definitely not View-Master Virtual Reality Starter Pack by Mattel. While there is nostalgic value in the design, this is really just a Google Cardboard device, and Google Cardboard was launched in 2014, so not really what you want to look at going forwards. You can scratch off the VR SHINECON and HUISPARK stuff off your list right away as well, if you’re looking for something budget to use with your phone for VR, just download the apps and try using… your hand. Virtual virtual reality. Not satisfactory? Yeah, now you’ve got the idea. Aim higher.

The headset that I got used to in the past was the HTC VIVE and so I am mainly looking to compare other options to this.

Jump to the tables below for comparisons!

There’s a PCMag article saying “best for 2021” top picks for VR headsets. And there’s the new HTC Focus 3 and HTC Vive Pro 2 headsets pre-ordering in May 2021 aimed at the high-end/business/enterprise user.

Articles and research like this can be difficult for Canadians. The offers suggested, are they even available in Canada? (Yes!) And what are we *actually* looking at for then versus now for price, especially if there’s been dollar movement?

So at the start of the year it seems like the site is referring to a 64GB model. Which, I don’t know but this site seems to indicate that the 64GB should be fine at this time. Another site site confirms the $299 USD for 64GB and $399 USD for 256GB.

In January, this should pan out as CDN $379.73, or in May CDN $361.79 for the $299 model. {January: USD * 1.28, May: *1.21)

For the $399 model, $510.72 and $482.79 CDN.

SO I don’t know what sort of ripoff bullshit this is that Oculus has $459 / 64GB and $629 / 256GB for prices (shipping included, also headset two controllers (one for each hand) AA batteries [really?] a power adapter and a glasses spacer which sounds uncomfortable but hopefully beats the Vive.)

And yet Amazon has the prices at $399 CDN / 64GB and $549 CDN/256 GB so… yeah. Probably better to go there, and I’m assuming it’s still Oculus that provides the product so a little weird that is set up that way (partially import fees, maybe?) but whatever I shall speculate no longer at the pros and cons of a business going through Amazon for fulfillment rather than handling their own!

Back to the size issue, this isn’t quite decided – without knowing if maybe there will be larger size games in the future, it’s maybe difficult to tell whether it’s good to go with a larger size. Both sizes come with the ability to link to PC and it’s not like buying the larger one means it’ll stay good longer, but the HTC Vive has been around for a long time and is still decent, if not as exceptional as it seemed the first time you put it on. (It’s still pretty magical, honestly, but I really want a better resolution when I buy one of my own.)

Link cable is about $100, but keep in mind this is designed as a standalone system. Oculus also recommends this cable in place of their $100 one. Note that that’s the American site and and are weirdly segregated in some ways (like gift card balances) if you were not aware.

How does this stack up against the Vive?
