How Much Does it Cost: Food and Groceries

Idea: as someone who has struggled in the past with the idea of going into a grocery store, how do I choose what to buy?

Premise: I would like to buy food items that contribute to my health and well-being, for example due to them providing nutrients and not providing detriments to my health. Also, be sure to check flyers. I use rebee, on Android! I think there’s something called flip? There are apps on various platforms and webpages as well.

Budget: under $1/100g * also note that in some areas or if on income assistance/disability there may be options to get food free or cheap, this will be covered in a different article.

Middle class: $1-$2/100g

Luxury: over $2/100g

Guidance: fruits and vegetables are different, and will be covered in a different article. In general, I am happy in Canada with cabbage closer to 79 or 99c/pound, zucchini closer to 1.49/pound, broccoli crowns preferably under $2/pound, other vegetables as well, I just try to buy whatever’s under $2 per pound. Pasta is often as cheap as .79 or .99 per pound or two.

Rice is usually best purchased in bulk on sale, but I don’t really eat rice.

Beans are always best purchased dry and prepared early.

Meats are now getting harder and harder to find under $1.00/100g, but places you can find are discount boxes e.g. 3kg or 5kg boxes of chicken or turkey often going on sale. Make sure to be aware of whether you are buying individually quick frozen or not: cold water and a large empty sink act as aids for breaking these up into useable portions.
